Thai and International Kite Festival 20 March 2007,
Every year, when the southerly wind sweeps across the open fields of the south of Thailand, the kite-flying season begins. For one long weekend each March, the skies above Hua Hin fill with kites from all over the world.
Kite-flying has been a popular Thai sport for centuries, and kites take a number of flat or three-dimensional forms. Popular ones feature owls, fishes, various faces and serpents and range from inches to 25 feet in size. The Pakpao and Chula kites are symbols of a national sport played by the Thai kings throughout history. The battle between the male Chula and female Pakpao kites is the highlight of such festivals as these.
