The 6th Koh Samui Regatta
20 March 2007,
The 6th Koh Samui Regatta is scheduled for 27th May to 2nd June and already the interest is high. Hong Kong and Singapore based boats gathered at the recent Royal Langkawi Regatta were keen to find out details of the Samui event.
Yacht entries are expected to be in the 30-35 range with a guaranteed fleet of 6 Firefly Sports 850's racing in a one design class joining the regulars. These boats have just faced off in Langkawi, will number five in the upcoming Phang Nga Bay Regatta and six for Samui. This includes local sailor David Hills who has bought Voodoo Child, the first Firefly completed, to replace his boat damaged in last years Koh Samui Regatta. This class is fast becoming the talk of Asia.
Abraxus and Aquavit IV, both from Singapore, have already signed up, and the usual suspects are expected to take up the challenge. Sunsail have confirmed they will send a fleet of Yachts to Samui which will be available for charter to compete. If there are enough Sunsail boats entered, there will be a special prize for them.
The other classes are expected to be Racing, Premier Cruising, IRC, Multihull and a Charter or Club Class.
Tony Denham from Australia has been recruited to run the racing on the water and Howard Elliot, also from Sydney will head the jury.
The bigger yachts from Hong Kong have requested longer courses on the round-the-cans races and this will be taken on board by the race committee. They complain they were getting round the course too quickly last year!
Sponsors Samui Central Beach Resort, Land Rover Thailand and Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) are all on board and negotiations are well under way with other sponsors, on the island and off the island, to provide a week of great entertainment and parties - in the tradition of Koh Samui Regatta.
La Fortune, the traditional Burmese Junk, will provide a great viewing platform for VIPs and sponsors guests.
