The largest Island Phuket is Thailand's largest island. It is nestled against the Indian Ocean coast about 87 kilometers south of Bangkok. Phuket Island runs 48 kilometers (34 miles) north to south and 21 kilometers (16 miles) east to west. Phuket is broken by a chain of mountains and valleys mainly from a north-south range running down the west coast. This accounts for about 70% of the land area. The tallest peak, Mai Tao Sip Song (12 Cane Peak) is 529 meters. The other 30% of the island is flat land located mainly in the central and eastern portions of the island. Laying in the Andaman Sea off southern Thailand’s west coast, the island’s terrain is incredibly varied, with rocky headlands, long broad sandy beaches, limestone cliffs, forested hills, small estuaries, lagoons, and tropical vegetation of all kinds.

Phuket island has been well known for a long time, first by miners and later by travelers. The beauty of the beaches, the fascinating landscape and the elegance of the coral reefs under the sea, resulted in it being dubbed the Pearl of the South. Its large size has allowed microclimates to develop in different areas of the island. The island, a thriving major international resort, has a rich and colorful history. It derives its wealth from tin and rubber, and is blessed with teeming marine life.

Phuket's glory is its majestic coastline. Thailand's southern isle of paradise, Phuket Island is bounteously provided with a wide array of attractive beaches and idyllic islands surrounded by the warm turquoise waters of the Andaman Sea. Beaches range from gentle crescents of sand with calm waters to rocky headlands pounded by raging surf. The island's western shore is dotted with dozens of spectacular beaches, bays, capes, cliffs and coral reefs. To see Phuket Map with attractions and hotels, click here.

Phuket Town, the provincial centre of Phuket, is home to all legal and government offices including Immigration and the Tourist Authority of Thailand (TAT) which is found near the clock tower at the intersection of Monsirit, Tilok Uthit, Phuket Rds.

The main bus terminal (for off-island destinations) is off Phang-nga Rd and the local bus center is found in the central market area near the intersection of Ranong and Rasada Rds. Rang Hill offers a great view of Phuket and the bay.

The Marine Biological Research Centre and Aquarium are near the Port of Phuket and the pier for the ferries is on the north end of Phuket Bay. Phuket Boat Lagoon lies about 20km north of Phuket Town at Ao Sapam. Phuket International Hospital is north of the intersection of highways 4020 and 402 (near Lotus shopping centre) and Bangkok Phuket Hospital and Clinic are located north off Yaowarat Rd. and all other types of medical needs can be met in Phuket Town.

Both international schools are to the north end of Phuket Town as well as the local university. There is a wide range of restaurants, accommodations and shopping available here.

Patong Beach
Home of the 3 star package Phuket tourist, fake merchandise shops, girly (for "rent") bars, seafood restaurants that quote by the 100gm (to make their expensive food seem cheaper), US Navy visits and "lady boys" (drag queen transvestites). A "great" place if you like haggling for fake goods (You should pay only 120 baht for a music / software / DVD etc. CD if you negotiate well), and watching / participating in bars with friendly ("Hello, what's your name, where do you come from, buy me one drink?") girls while watching other girls with expressionless faces dance naked on stage. more...

Kamala Beach
Kamala is still relatively unspoiled with extremely friendly locals (the main village area inland is also the Muslim "capital" of Phuket). It is also one of the very few places in Phuket where you can find 2 / 3 star hotels on the beach, and inexpensive, genuine Thai food. Kamala beach stretches for 2km. And apart from the central hotel section, is practically free of sun loungers. There is still an active fishing village and good local market (Wednesdays and Saturdays). Unfortunately perhaps, local restaurants are continuously being bought out and "improved" by westerners, and the headland developed with private villas. more...

Mai Khao Beach
is a mostly deserted beach where sea turtles comes to lay their eggs. To get here look for the sign to JW Marriott Phuket Resort on the high-way north of Phuket International Airport. Then follow the road past the 5-star resort and soon you will be on the beach. more...

Bang Tao Beach
Bang Tao Beach is an unashamed 5 star resort area with white sandy beach and man made lakes that separate many resorts. There are some good, inexpensive beach-front restaurants / shops. Although, unfortunately for guests, these often block the view from the hotel grounds (The Sheraton Grande Laguna & Laguna Beach Club "suffer" the most from these "shanty shacks").more...

Karon Beach
Karon is a popular tourist beach 6 kilometers south of Patong, stretching more than 3 km with soft golden sand that squeaks when walked on, like cold snow. Along the beach road are sand dunes that separates the beach from the road. Karon Beach is one of the best tourist beaches in Phuket with only two rows of sunbeds and crystal clear sea, perfect for swimming. more...

Kata Beach
Kata is a broad and curving beach with soft white sand, an evergreen small island out in the bay named Poo and lush green hills in the background. The 1,5 km long beach is located in a protected bay with calm crystal clear water, and since the sea are shallow longer out than the beaches at Kata Noi and Karon it is more child friendly. more...
